                    ¨Ongoing Transformation¨

The U.S. population grew dramatically between 1830 and 1930. It went from about 12 million people to

almost 120 million. Immigrants made up about 40 million of that increase. They helped make the united states a diverse country. Many different foods and cultures became part of the nation.

Other changes came to the American population. In the mid 1800, People from rural areas began moving to cities. New industries developed, and they needed workers. Workers in a factory could earn more than they could from farm work.

Better jobs drew many people from farms to the cities. After the civil war, Freed African left the south for cities in the north. They were looking for jobs and a better life. By 1920, more than half of all Americans lived in towns or cities.
