                                        Summary:

Duties And Responsibilities of American Citizens:

Citizens help make our Communities safe and agreeable places to live. We do this by living up to our duties and responsibilities. Responsibilities are things we should do. They are actions that we choose to do, even though they are not required. Duties are actions that citizens are required to carry out. National, States, and Local government establish those duties by law. Anyone who fails to perform his or her duties is subject to penalties, such as being fined or sent to prison.

Obey Laws:

The most important duty for citizens is to obey the Law. People establish laws in order to live together in peace. Laws help people understand what is acceptable behavior and what is unacceptable. Laws enable governments to keep order and protect our safety, Health, and Property. Communities suffer harm and conflict when people do not obey the law.

Defend The Nations:

Most male citizen aged 18 to 25 must register with the selective service System ( SSS). They may be needed to defend the nation. In the event of war or extreme national emergency, The government may need to draft, or call for military service, Men from this list. The United States has not had a draft since 1973. Since then, Volunteers have met the needs of the armed Forces.

Service In Court:

Every adult citizen must be prepared to serve on jury. A person accused of crime has right to a trial by jury. That right is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

A Jury is a group of citizens who listen to the evidence presented in court. They are required to think about it fairly and decide whether the accused is guilty. During the trial, The accused has the right to hear and present witnesses. If citizens are asked to be a witness at atrial. They have a duty to do so.

Attend School:

Attending school is also a duty. Most  states require children aged (7) seven to (16) sixteenth to attend school. Schools teach students how to become good citizens. They also prepare students to become skilled employees who can contribute to the nations economy.

Pay Taxes:

citizens must also pay taxes. There are different kinds of taxes:

a.) Income Taxes        c.) Sales Tax

b.) Property Taxes

=Tax money keeps the government running. Without taxes, The federal government could not pay its employees, defend the country, or help those in need. Local governments could not hire police officers and firefighters, Run Schools, or Pave Roads. People who try to avoid paying taxes face stiff fines and other penalties.

A History Of Immigration ( Dixie R. Galvez)

            A Diverse Population:

In the united states, many people have similar customs and celebrate the same national holidays. However, some people have different customs.

Their families may have come from other countries and continued the traditions of their homelands. About 13 percent of all Americans were born in another country. These foreign born people are immigrants, or people who move permanently to a new country.

Almost everyone now living in the united states has ancestors who lived in another country at one time. People have been coming here ever since colonial times. Despite their different backgrounds, they have worked together to build a nation.

                ¨A history of Immigration:

Summary 1830-1860 ( Dixie R. Galvez) 16085E Lancashire Dr. 33470. U.S.A Palm Beach.

                        Summary of 1830- 1860:

From the 1830- 1860: the united states took in more than 5 million people. Most had left Ireland and Germany to escape poverty and disease. Many from other countries were drawn by the discovery of Gold in California in 1848. They hope to get rich. Thousands of immigrants came from China.

Between 1860 and 1890, Another 10 million immigrants came from Europe. Many were from norther and western European Countries such as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Then a shift in immigration occurred.

From 1890 to 1924, About 22 million immigrants arrived. Most came from southern and Eastern European nations such as Italy, Greece, Poland, and Russia.

By the late 1900, a larger share of immigrants than ever before came from Asia and Latin America. Today, more than half of all the people in the united States who were born in another country come from Latin America.

________________________________________________________________________________

                    ¨Ongoing Transformation¨

The U.S. population grew dramatically between 1830 and 1930. It went from about 12 million people to

almost 120 million. Immigrants made up about 40 million of that increase. They helped make the united states a diverse country. Many different foods and cultures became part of the nation.

Other changes came to the American population. In the mid 1800, People from rural areas began moving to cities. New industries developed, and they needed workers. Workers in a factory could earn more than they could from farm work.

Better jobs drew many people from farms to the cities. After the civil war, Freed African left the south for cities in the north. They were looking for jobs and a better life. By 1920, more than half of all Americans lived in towns or cities.

                                                    Roots Of Citizenship:

The idea of citizenship, or the rights and duties of citizens, began in ancient Greece And Room. Greek and Roman citizens had legal rights and could take part in government. However, only men who owned property could be citizens. In addition to rights, They had duties to their government. They had to pay taxes and serve in the armed forces.

Later, other ideas about citizens arose. in 1700, Thinkers in America and France changed the ancient ideas. They said that being a citizen meant belonging to a nation. Another important idea was the ¨ Consent of the governed¨. T

This means that government get their power from the people being governed. Citizens consent, or agree, by participating in government.

People had the chance to gain more power with this new idea, However, The power was still not shared by all.  In the united states, Citizenship at first    was limited mostly to white men.

Other groups struggled to gain full citizenship. In 1868, The Fourteenth Amendment gave citizenship to African American Men.

In 1920, Women gained suffrage with the Nineteenth Amendment.

In 1924, All Native Americans Became citizens when Congress passed the Indian Citizenship Act.

Today , There are two ways that a person can become an American citizen. There are either by birth or by going through a special process.
