Duties And Responsibilities of American Citizens:

Citizens help make our Communities safe and agreeable places to live. We do this by living up to our duties and responsibilities. Responsibilities are things we should do. They are actions that we choose to do, even though they are not required. Duties are actions that citizens are required to carry out. National, States, and Local government establish those duties by law. Anyone who fails to perform his or her duties is subject to penalties, such as being fined or sent to prison.

Obey Laws:

The most important duty for citizens is to obey the Law. People establish laws in order to live together in peace. Laws help people understand what is acceptable behavior and what is unacceptable. Laws enable governments to keep order and protect our safety, Health, and Property. Communities suffer harm and conflict when people do not obey the law.

Defend The Nations:

Most male citizen aged 18 to 25 must register with the selective service System ( SSS). They may be needed to defend the nation. In the event of war or extreme national emergency, The government may need to draft, or call for military service, Men from this list. The United States has not had a draft since 1973. Since then, Volunteers have met the needs of the armed Forces.

Service In Court:

Every adult citizen must be prepared to serve on jury. A person accused of crime has right to a trial by jury. That right is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

A Jury is a group of citizens who listen to the evidence presented in court. They are required to think about it fairly and decide whether the accused is guilty. During the trial, The accused has the right to hear and present witnesses. If citizens are asked to be a witness at atrial. They have a duty to do so.

Attend School:

Attending school is also a duty. Most states require children aged (7) seven to (16) sixteenth to attend school. Schools teach students how to become good citizens. They also prepare students to become skilled employees who can contribute to the nations economy.

Pay Taxes:

citizens must also pay taxes. There are different kinds of taxes:

=Tax money keeps the government running. Without taxes, The federal government could not pay its employees, defend the country, or help those in need. Losing Citizenship:

American can lose their citizenship in three (3) Ways:

1.) Expatriation = Someone who gives his/ or her loyalty to a foreign country is expatriated.

EXAMPLE:

= Is a person who chooses to become a naturalized citizen of another country.

2.) Denaturalization = Naturalized citizens who are discovered to have lied on their citizenship application are denaturalized They lose their citizenship and maybe deported, or sent back to their own country.

3.) Being Convicted of Certain Crimes = Any one convicted of any of three serious crimes can lose citizenship. These crimes are treason, taking part in a rebellion, or using violence to try to overthrow the government.

= Only the federal government can grant citizenship or take it away. However, States can deny, or take away, some privileges of citizenship.

In the united states, many people have similar customs and celebrate the same national holidays. However, some people have different customs.

Their families may have come from other countries and continued the traditions of their homelands. About 13 percent of all Americans were born in another country. These foreign born people are immigrants, or people who move permanently to a new country.

Almost everyone now living in the united states has ancestors who lived in another country at one time. People have been coming here ever since colonial times. Despite their different backgrounds, they have worked together to build a nation.
